Paolo Sorrentino, director, opened the 82nd Venice Film Festival with his new film in competition, “La Grazia,” starring Toni Servillo, strutting down the red carpet in grand style. The film, which centers on a fictional President of the Republic grappling with self-doubt, was greeted with sustained applause.
Paolo Sorrentino has a deep connection with the Venice Film Festival, where he debuted in 2001 with his first feature film, “One Man Up.” In subsequent years, while favoring Cannes for many of his films, he returned to the Lido with impactful works.
A highlight came in 2021 with “The Hand of God,” a personal and autobiographical film set in Naples, which won the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize. He also screened the first episodes of his hit television series, “The Young Pope,” out of competition, demonstrating his continued presence and influence on the Venetian film scene.
