Editorial License
What You Can Do With Your Purchase
When you buy a photograph from Animica Portraits Official, you are purchasing a Standard Editorial License. Here’s what that means, in plain terms.
What is an Editorial License?
An editorial license allows you to use the image to inform, illustrate, or comment on a real event, person, or topic of public interest — the same way a newspaper or magazine would. It does not allow you to use the image to sell, advertise, or promote a product, service, or brand.
This is standard practice across the photography industry (used by agencies such as Getty Images, AP, and Reuters) because the people, brands, and locations shown in editorial photographs have not given consent for their image to be used in advertising.
What you CAN do
- Use the image in news articles, blog posts, and online publications
- Use it in documentaries and non-commercial video content
- Share it on social media to illustrate a topic of public interest (e.g. covering an event, a person, a cultural moment)
- Print it in a newspaper or magazine (interior pages)
What you CANNOT do
- Use the image for advertising, marketing, or promotional campaigns
- Use it on product packaging, book or magazine covers, or merchandise
- Use it to imply endorsement of a product, service, or brand by the person shown
- Resell, sublicense, or redistribute the image itself as a standalone product
- Modify the image to alter its editorial meaning or context in a misleading way

Every editorial use of this image must include the following credit line, placed adjacent to the image or within the publication’s photo credits:
Ph. Barbara Pigazzi / Animica Portraits Official
This credit is a condition of the license, not an optional courtesy.
Why editorial only?
Many of our photographs are taken at public events — red carpets, festivals, cultural events — where the people photographed have not signed a release authorizing commercial use of their image. This is a legal protection for both you and us: editorial use respects the subject’s right to control commercial use of their own image, while still allowing the public interest in documenting real events and public figures.
Questions about a specific use case?

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the photo on Instagram or social media?
Yes, as long as the use illustrates a topic of public interest (e.g. covering an event or a public figure) and includes the required photo credit. It cannot be used in a sponsored/promotional post.
Can I crop, edit, or add text to the photo?
Minor cropping and resizing are fine. You cannot alter the image in a way that changes its meaning or context, or use it to create a misleading impression.
The photo shows a visible brand or logo — can I use it in relation to that brand?
No. Editorial use covers reporting on the event itself, not promoting any brand, product, or company that appears in the image, even incidentally.
What happens if I forget the photo credit?
The credit line is a condition of the license, not optional. Publications that don’t include it may be asked to add it retroactively or may lose the right to further use the image.
Can I get a refund after downloading the file?
Since delivery is instant and the file is a digital download, purchases are final once the download link has been sent. Contact us if you believe there’s been an error with your order.
Do I need a different license for advertising or commercial use?
Yes. This editorial license does not cover advertising, promotional, or commercial use. Contact us at hello@animicaportraits.com to discuss availability for a specific project.
